Tips for Healthy Dining Mexican Style
Well, it has been a long working week but tonight, Friday, I get to indulge in one of my all-time favourite passions – dining out in one of San Pedro de Alcantara’s Mexican restaurants. Burritos, Enchiladas, Fajitas, Tacos, I love them all. However, some fried Mexican dishes such as refried beans and fried tacos can be a bit of a nightmare for the health conscious. So without further ado here are some tips for making dining out Mexican style that little bit healthier.
- Try to avoid fried dishes like tortilla chips chalupas, taquitos and chimichangas.
- Instead of the cheese dip choose a fresh salsa instead.
- Choose soft shell tacos over hard shell. Hard shells are fried, whereas soft shells are not.
- To save even more fat and calories ask for corn tortillas instead of flour tortillas.
- Avoid refried beans, which are often made with lard or bacon, rather order black or pinto beans as a healthier option.
- Grilled chicken or shrimp and chicken or veggie fajitas offer a healthier option to fried items.
- Taco salad, best without the deep-fried taco bowl. It’s a big, fried tortilla chip!
- Use salsa as a salad dressing, you wouldn’t believe how good it tastes.
- Ask that the sauce that would normally smother your burrito or enchilada be served as a side dish and use it sparingly as a dip.
Mexican food is delicious and I definitely don’t follow all of these rules every time I dine out at a Mexican restaurant and every once in awhile I enjoy to go full out. However, if you pick and choose where you give and take, your meal will be just as enjoyable and even a bit healthier. I hope you find this short guide to Healthy Dining Mexican Style helpful and would just like to say bien provecho (good appetite).
